Gunnison County Electric Association, an electric co-op serving Gunnison, Hinsdale and Saguache counties, has received a USDA grant to help its members become more energy efficient.
Agricultural producers and rural small business owners in the Gunnison area now have access to energy audits and information on energy efficiency methods thanks to their local electric cooperative and a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development program, according to Jim Isgar, Colorado state director for USDA. Gunnison County Electric Association was recently awarded Colorado’s first $73,890 Renewable Energy for America Programs/Energy Audit grant. The co-op plans to leverage the grant from USDA Rural Development with matching funds from its own budget. Businesses and ag producers will be required to make a small personal investment toward the cost of the energy audit. Once complete, the audit will provide a detailed report describing the current energy system and usage and opportunities for improvements, along with expected savings from each improvement.
