Co-op Helps Teachers Teach Energy Efficiency

San Miguel Power Association, Inc., in Ridgway has new tool for teaching school-aged children in grades K-5 about the importance of energy efficiency. And, it’s offering it free-of-charge to all local elementary schools in its service territory.

Because the co-op is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative®, SMPA has access to a program called the "Super Energy Savers" classroom kit. The program teaches young students about electricity, electrical safety, energy savings, and renewable energy.

"SMPA is constantly talking about energy efficiency. And, we've got lots of programs that help adults become more energy efficient. But, we all know that it's just as important to teach our children how to make wise energy decisions when they're young, so that they develop lifelong good habits," said SMPA General Manager Kevin Ritter.

The program teaches students how to become "Super Energy Savers." In addition to classroom activities, the students take a checklist home and walk through the house with their parents to identify energy saving practices. The students bring the checklist back to school and receive a "Super Energy Saver" certificate signed by CFL Charlie.

The kit can also be paired with the Touchstone Energy Kids Zone website http://www.touchstoneenergykids.com/index.php. The website includes basic information about energy, kid-friendly energy efficiency tips, interactive games, and teacher resources.

Anyone can find additional energy saving information at www.touchstoneenergy.com.
